29.09.22 - SEE Monster, Weston-super-Mare

It's not often the opportunity to visit a rare piece of architecture such as an offshore gas platform presents itself, especially on your doorstep. Despite the installations beautifully ironic existence, the 'SEE Monster' felt an audacious and brave attempt to recycle the impossible. First hand the platform was much smaller than I'd imagined, giant husks of twisted metal were in fact quite lacy with a top heavy feel, the thought of rough weather in the North Sea standing in it's rusting midst was archaic. Heavy private security gave the event a politicised twist, but also struck home the question of 'what is progression' has evolved post Covid, just moving forward is no longer acceptable. Could such a structure repurpose to become the basis for affordable near shore housing for example?
